Ying Xu
Internationally Recognized Musician
And Conductor Of classical Works
Conductor Ying Xu is currently the assistant conductor of the Schwob Philharmonic, Schwob Contemporary Ensemble, CSU Opera, and Columbus Ballet. She is also the Artistic Director of the Heritage Chamber Music Series in Columbus GA, which brings an eclectic mix of chamber music to the Chattahoochee region, featuring a variety of world class performers including Wendy Warner, Sergiu Schwartz, Patricia Weitzel, and many others.
A dedicated advocate for contemporary music, Ms. Xu made her debut conducting the premiere of Giuseppe Gallo-Balma’s atmospheric Bacá with Schwob Philharmonic and recently led the premiere of Alexey Shegolev’s Variations on a Russian Theme. This season she will be conducting the Georgia premiere of Jessie Montgomery’s Soul Force. Her experience also extends to opera and musical theatre, where she has led productions of La Finta Giardiniera, Guys and Dolls, The Light in the Piazza, and The Nutcracker. As a guest conductor, she appeared with the Rainey McCullers School of the Arts, a new arts magnet school in Columbus, GA.
A world renowned guitarist Ms. Xu has won 16 international competitions including 19th Annual Guitar symposium & competition (USA, 2018), Borguitar Festival (Italy, 2017), Mississippi Guitar Festival (USA, 2016), Florida Guitar Festival (USA, 2016) ShengYang International Guitar Festival (China 2016 & 2012) Great Composers Competition (The Music of 19th Century) (USA, 2016), Appalachian GuitarFest Solo Guitar Competition (USA, 2016), Troy University Guitar Festival (USA, 2016), ChangSha International Guitar Festival (China, 2014 & 2015), Thailand International Guitar Competition (Thailand, 2014), 13th Annual Guitar symposium & competition Div. II (USA, 2012), ShenYang International Guitar Festival (Ensemble) (China 2012, 2013 & 2014). She has appeared as a recitalist around the world and performs frequently with internationally acclaimed artists.
She will complete a Masters Degree in Conducting from the Schwob School of Music, Columbus State University in Fall 2021, where she has studied with Paul Hostetter. She has additional studies with Gerard Schwartz, Grant Cooper, and Jose Luis Novo as a scholarship student at the Eastern Summer Music Festival, where she also appeared with the Eastern Festival Orchestra.
